Urethane resin

"I am interested in the transformation and contrasts discovered through
woodturning. The process of converting a featureless block of wood into a
graceful, symmetrical form is always fascinating and full of surprises.
While working at the lathe, all the details and color of the object are
integrated into a spinning blur that reveals only its outline. At rest,
the same object can disclose complex details and dramatic coloring while
possessing an entirely different sense of motion."

About the process:
"I fill a paper saucer with urethane casting resin and cure under pressure in a
painter's pressure pot. After curing, I strip away the paper and hot glue the
block to a wooden faceplate and hand-turn the inside surface. The piece is
then transferred to my home-built ornamental turning machine and the pattern is
cut deeply with a 0.050 inch diameter, long-reach end mill. After cutting, the
piece is filled with urethane resin of contrasting color and cast again. The
cured piece is then turned back to the original surface to reveal the image.
The piece is then remounted to turn the bottom and shaped to expose the image
on both the top and bottom of the form."
